John Masefield collection, 1894-1944.

Collection contains letters by John Masefield, most regarding his work, from 1906 to 1944; a small group of material about the December 1920 edition of The Chapbook (published by The Poetry Bookshop) which contained a musical composition by Malcolm Davidson based on Masefield's poem, "A Christmas Carol"; prints and photographs of Masefield; and a nautical certificate dated 1894, presented to Masefield from the ship "Conway."

The English poet, playwright and novelist John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Later he moved to Oxford which was where he lived when most of the following collection was produced. Masefield became Poet Laureate in 1930 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935.
